Greenbank WA

Greenbank WA is a small, rural community at the southern end of Whidbey Island, at the narrowest point of the island.  It was once a gathering and hunting place for Native Americans, and was later settled by Danish settlers in the early 1900s.

It’s best known attractions include Greenbank Farm and Meerkerk Gardens.

1.Greenbank Farm

Greenbank Farm is one of Whidbey Island’s most popular destinations, with an iconic, red barn visible from the highway.  It has a hillside setting, with stunning views of both the Olympic Mountains and Cascades.

Greenbank Farm began as a dairy farm in 1904.  It then became one of the largest producers of loganberries, before being acquired by a consortium blocking a proposed housing division at the site of the farm.

Today you can visit the Old Spot Bistro at the farm, to sample the famous Whidbey Island Pies or enjoy breakfast or lunch. There’s also a few small shops to browse, selling cheese, wine, gourmet food, and artworks.  You can then step outside to explore the beautiful gardens and wetlands.

Explore 7-miles of trails that meander along an open meadow at Greenbank Farm, with an off-leash area for dogs.

2. Meerkerk Gardens

Meerkerk Gardens is just south of Greenbank Farm, and has miles of trails through 10-acres of formal gardens, and 53-acres of woodland.

The display garden includes a rock garden, cherry tree alley, and stunning rhododendron garden, with a peak blooming season in April and May.  The garden was first established in the 1960s by Max and Ann Meerkerk, with a particular interest in hybridizing rhododendrons.

The best views at the Meerkerk Gardens are from the gazebo, overlooking the breathtaking Saratoga Passage towards Camano Island.

3. Holmes Harbor Cellars

The award winning Holmes Harbor Cellars has an idyllic setting on a hillside, with an Italianate style building, that houses a small tasting room.  The property has a large lawn area overlooking Holmes Harbor, with plenty of outdoor seating and cozy igloos for cooler days.

4. South Whidbey State Park

South Whidbey State Park is on the west shore of Greenbank WA, and has breathtaking views of Admiralty Inlet and the Olympic Mountains. This 381-acre day use park has miles of trails through old growth forest and down to the beach (although the beach trail is currently closed). You can also hike to an ancient, 500 year old cedar.  A Discover Pass is required.

5. Greenbank Pantry and Deli

Greenbank Pantry sells a range of gourmet food goods, like meats, cheeses, wines and baked goods. You can also stop by for a delicious sandwich!
