Iron Springs Resort is a 2.5 hour drive from Seattle, on the wild southwestern coast of Washington State. This eco resort is nestled amongst the trees, near an enchanting outlet where a creek meanders into the Pacific Ocean.  

The cabins blend seamlessly with the landscape, and have been here for over 80 years. They were built in the 1940s and renovated in 2010, retaining many of their original features like stone fireplaces and vaulted ceilings. 

There's a general store on site, and the popular seaside town of Seabrook is just up the road, with a coffee shop and restaurants. You can also drive 15 minutes south down to Ocean Shores, for a further selection of restaurants. 

Iron Springs Resort is also very dog friendly, so don't forget to bring fido!  There's an outdoor water spigot outside each cabin for cleaning off your dog, and a special dog treat upon arrival.

10 best things to do at Iron Springs Resort

1. Cosy up by the fire in a luxe cabin while savoring water views.

These beautiful cabins were built for long, lazy days overlooking the ocean.  In winter they're the perfect place to retreat, with a roaring fire or wood burning stove, comfy chairs, and a self contained kitchen. Fresh firewood is also provided each day, in a storage area outside. In summer the patio is ideal for BBQs and basking in the warm weather.  Each cabin has a dishwasher, full kitchen, flat screen tv with DVD player, and Bose bluetooth speakers. 

There are 25 cabins for rent at Iron Springs Resort, and 15 are freestanding and 10 are part of a duplex. Each cabin accommodates between 2 to 7 people, so duplexes are a great idea for larger family groups. You can stay on a cabin directly overlooking the creek and beach, or in a more remote, cliff-top location further up on the bluff with west facing views of the Washington coastline.  

The cabins have retained their original, rustic character, while providing all the comforts of the modern age.  

2. Load up on supplies at the general store.

The general store at Iron Springs Resort sells beer, wine and drinks, breakfast items like croissants, eggs and hashbrowns, toiletries, baking items, desserts, snacks and supermarket dinners. You can also stop by here for clamming and fishing licenses, and clamming guns, nets and shovels.  This dog friendly resort also sells treats and bones for doggies, and toys, leashes and collars.

3. Walk through a private forested trail to the beach.

The creek acts as an obstruction to reaching the beach directly from the cabins, so guests need to walk a short distance along the highway to a private gate, that meanders through a beautiful thicket of forest before ending at the Pacific Ocean.  

4. Explore the dramatic, windswept beach at Iron Springs Resort.

Guests can walk roughly 1-mile south along the beach, between Boone Creek at Iron Springs Resort, down to the mouth of Copalis River.  Always check tide tables before beginning your walk.

Iron Springs Resort has arguably one of the most picturesque settings on the Washington State coast, comparable to the wild coastal beaches further north at the Olympic National Park.  This wild beach is surreal in its beauty, with ancient cliffs carved from sandstone, gigantic strewn logs, and deep brown sands covered in fields of yellow grass.

The beach around Iron Springs Resort is full of unexpected sights, artfully displayed amongst the beach grasses, like this small seating area fashioned from a patio chair, driftwood, planks and a crate.

Each new day the tide brings in new treasures for beachcombing, like these bits of driftwood scattered all over the beach.

5. Take a photo at the magic tree.

The magic tree is a favorite for kids, lighting up the imagination!  It can be found on the Iron Springs Resort private trail just off the highway, that leads to the beach.

6. Take the short road or trail up to the bluff viewpoint.

Follow the road or trail at Iron Springs Resort, all the way up to the Ocean Viewpoint on the bluff, just before you reach Cabin 28.

There's also a walking trail behind the General Store, that leads through a forest up to to the Ocean Viewpoint.

The trail only takes about 10 minutes, ending at the Ocean Viewpoint, but then intersects with the short section of road that continues to Cabin 28.

Cabin 28 is the most remote rental at Iron Springs Resort, perched atop a sheer cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's known as the Honeymoon Cabin, due to its seclusion.  Unfortunately there is no WIFI or satellite TV up here, but plenty of DVDs on hand. This cabin can accommodate 7 people, and has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a sleeper sofa in the living room. 

Can you see some of the cliff-top cabins at Iron Springs Resort?  Families with young children are probably better off staying closer to the General Store, away from the cliff.

7. Drive to Seabrook, Ocean Shores or the Olympic National Park.

There's really no reason to ever leave Iron Springs Resort, with a full kitchen and general store for all your food needs. 

However, if you get the itch to explore the local area further, drive 8 minutes north up the highway to the coastal resort town of Seabrook, and stop by their cafe, restaurants, and bookshop, or hang out at their playground with kids. The restaurant at Ocean Crest Restaurant is also a short drive past Seabrook, overlooking a primal coastal rainforest with steps down to the ocean. 

You can also drive 10 minutes south down to Ocean Shores, where kids can hang out at the Pacific Paradise Amusement Park, or Playtime Family Fun with go carts and bumper cars. The lovely Oyhut Bay Grill & Loft is a great place for lunch.

Iron Springs Resort also provides you easy access to the wonders of the world famous Olympic National Park.  Enjoy lunch and the spectacular lakeside setting at historic Lake Quinalt Lodge, just 40 minutes north of Iron Springs Resort.  The wild coastline at famous Kalaloch Lodge and Ruby Beach, is another popular day trip option, and is a 1.5 hour drive from Iron Springs Resort.

8. Check out a fascinating local museum.

The Museum of the North Beach at Moclips is an easy 10 minute drive up the highway from the Iron Springs Resort.  Although the museum is small, it's packed full of fascinating artifacts and stories about the local area. 

Amongst the most intriguing stories is the wild set of storms in 1911, 1913 and 1914 that swept away the gigantic 425 room Moclips Hotel that once catered to Washington States most affluent citizens!  You can also see items that washed up on local shores from the 1911 Japanese Tsunami, and purchase your own handblown glass fishing float.

9. Watch planes land on the beach!

Watch small planes land on the beach at Copalis Beach Airport, directly south of Iron Springs Resort (between the mouth of the Copalis River and Copalis Rock). This is the only beach airport in the continental United States.

10. Take advantage of some of the best razor clam digging in the world!

Pick up your clamming license and gear at the general store at Iron Springs Resort, then try your hand at one of the most popular pastimes on the Washington State coast.

The clamming takes place at either Mocrocks Beach 10 minutes north of Iron Springs Resort, or Copalis Beach just south of Iron Springs Resort, on specific razor clam season dates set by the Washington State Department of Fisheries. It's important to purchase a license, so the department can monitor over-harvesting and toxin levels of the clams.

Experienced clammers use a bucket and shovel, but novices might prefer to purchase a clam shovel gun at the Iron Springs Resort store. The clams can then be taken back to the wash station near the general store at Iron Springs Resort for cleaning.
