Top 20 Portland Oregon attractions

Hoyt Arboretum

I love the huge amount of green space in Portland Oregon, often just steps from dense urban areas.

One of the areas I visit frequently is Washington Park in the southwest hills, home to the famous Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon Zoo and Portland Rose Garden.

Another must-see attraction is the 160-acre Hoyt Arboretum, established in 1928 to protect endangered trees. It's FREE to visit, and has the most gorgeous forested areas full of coastal redwoods, pines, spruces and firs.

Pick up a map at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center, then explore one of the many trails. The trails range from 0.5 miles up to 3.4 miles, and the two best are the Fir Trail and to the Redwood Deck. You can also sign up for a guided tour, or fun classes in a forested setting on art, photography and yoga.

3 best things to do at Hoyt Arboretum

1. Stop by the Visitor Center.

I always stop by the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center to pick up a map, and learn about any new trails I haven't explored yet.  There's also some fun gifts, and bottled water for super hot days.

2. Explore the trails.

There are 12-miles of trails to explore at the Hoyt Arboretum, with many starting at the Visitor Center.

An easy loop for beginners is the Fir Trail (0.5 miles), that starts just across from the Visitor Center.

Another popular trail is to the Redwood Deck (1 mile loop), with a majestic setting amongst stately coast redwoods. This setting is so beautiful it's often reserved for wedding ceremonies.

3. Book a guided tour or class.

Book a guided tour to see the Magnolia, Conifer and Maple Collections. There are also watercolor classes, tai-chai lessons in the forest, yoga, forestry bathing, and photography classes. Check events and classes.
